Study on the formation of amino acid cluster ions by electrospray droplet impact/SIMS and thermal desorption method

Positive and negative polarity mass spectra for 20 solid amino acids (AAs) were measured by electrospray droplet impact/SIMS and thermal desorption method. Characteristic magic numbers of cluster ions for [n(AA)+H]+ and [n(AA)-H]- were observed for many AAs, e.g., [8(Ser)+H]+ and [6(Ser)-H]-. The mechanisms for the formation of cluster ions were investigated.
