We will report of deterioration characteristics of bioplastics made from poly(butylene succinate)(PBSu) using bench-top MALDI-TOFMS and statistical analysis.
We buried the biodegradable straws made from PBSu at the following three locations in the “Shimadzu Forest” of the headquarters : i) high humidity, ii) high microbe activity, iii) long term exposure to sunlight. In addition to the buried straws, an untreated straw was prepared for comparison.
Multiple series of oligomers with a 172 Da gap, which corresponds to a monomer unit of PBSu, were observed using MALDI-TOFMS. The main signals were assigned to cyclic oligomers of PBSu. The minor signals observed between the intense signals of the cyclic oligomers were assigned as linear oligomers. The linear oligomers of PBSu had several variations because of the different combinations of both end terminal groups. Interestingly, the linear oligomer intensities in the three conditions were different to each other as well as to the untreated straw. An elucidation of deterioration characteristics of the straws obtained from three different conditions can be supported by statistical analysis. As a result, the combination of useful bench-top MALDI-TOFMS and rapid statistical analysis can contribute to the evaluation of deterioration characteristics of biodegradable plastics.
