Analysis of Synthetic Polymers in Ion Mobility-Tandem mass spectrometry

Polymers with large molecular weight are difficult to interpret using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) due to the generation of various highly multiply charged analytes. To solve this problem, we propose a method combining tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and collision-induced charge stripping, and analysis of poly(ethylene oxide)s weighing 20 kDa and methoxy-PEO-maleimide weighing 40 kDa were successfully demonstrated. In the analysis for synthetic polymers weighing more than a few tens of kilodalton in ESI-IMS-MS/MS, the m/z value of the most abundant peak was used for characterization. However, the identification of the most abundant peak from the isotopic peaks was often difficult due to the background noise. Here, we employed a noise reduction method using Fourier transform (FT) filtering and end group analysis of poly(methylmethacrylate)s weighing 1-18 kDa was successfully demonstrated. Analyses of polyoxymethylene, liquid crystal polymer, and co-polymers were also achieved in ESI-IMS-MS/MS.
