We are developing a new single particle mass spectrometer for the real-time detection of trace radioactive aerosols and ensuring the safety of the workspace and surrounding environment during the decommissioning of failed Fukushima Nuclear Plant. The mass spectrometric approach is superior to the standard radiation measurement techniques for detecting trace radioactive aerosols, although further enhancement and improvement in the single particle mass spectrometer are required to meet the goal.
