Early intervention in mental disorders especially depression has been critical to prevent its negative impact including hikikomori and suicide. However, early intervention is difficult due to the lack of objective biological assessment systems for mental disorders. In real world clinical practice, some depressed patients tend to hide their depressive symptoms due to shame and/or stigma against mental disorders. Therefore, objective biological biomarkers should be developed to solve the above-difficult situations.
We have been conducting the blood metabolome analysis of patients with mental disorders such as depression and hikikomori. We have revealed that a variety of tryptophan-kynurenine and lipid related metabolites are involved in the pathophysiology of depression. In addition, we have shown several blood metabolites from patients with hikikomori. In this symposium, we will introduce our recent findings of metabolome data in mental disorders, and hope to discuss the future mental support system using blood metabolome data in psychiatry.
