GC/MS を用いた未知環境汚染物質の探索における分子式情報の活用

In chemical spill incidents associated with flood, tsunami etc., quick identifications of the spilled chemicals in environmental surface water like river water, pond water or sea water are needed. In such cases, GC/MS is the most promising way and has already been utilized in Japan. However, the conventional exploration method using GC/MS sometimes fails to identify environmental contaminants properly due to complicated environmental matrix or resemble mass spectra of them. Thus in this study, GC/EI/FI/TOFMS was used to see its effectiveness in preventing from erroneous identifications. The FI coupled with high-resolution MS makes us possible to identify unknowns by using molecular-formula information. The conventional exploration method, i.e., identification by only mass spectral similarity with a spectrum in a library, could identify 72% of contaminants in three raw sewage samples properly. On the contrary, an identification method using EI mass spectral similarity, GC retention index value and molecular formula information could identify 97% of the contaminants in the samples properly.
