Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) allows visualization of diverse components of a sample. We report the development of a new tapping-mode scanning probe electrospray ionization (t-SPESI) unit for high spatial resolution imaging as well as the results of lipid imaging of isolated HeLa cells. The MSI of HeLa cells at a sampling pitch of 2 μm resulted in the visualization of multiple phospholipids within the cells.
