Investigation of fluorinated surfactants for firefighting foams used as alternatives for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid is crucial for understanding and predicting environmental and human health risks posed by them during the material and product life cycle. Here, to understand more about the fluorinated surfactants, we investigated organofluorine compounds in seventy-one samples of firefighting foam available in Japan. Combustion ion chromatography was used to measure total fluorine content in the firefighting foam samples. Then, non-target analysis of the firefighting foam samples was carried out by liquid chromatography−electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
