Global helium shortage and rising prices are urging the scientific community to find alternatives to helium as carrier gas. Hydrogen is the best candidate over nitrogen in terms of its chromatographic efficiency (van Demeter plot). However, the development of a method of transfer is needed. This study aims to feature the differences and advantages of hydrogen focusing on the total analysis time, analyte’s retention time, area, and mass spectral library similarity. As well as a method translation of an existing helium-based GC method to hydrogen for a rapid and robust GC method coupled to LECO’s Pegasus BT time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC-TOFMS) for the high-quality analysis of components in Tea Tree Essential Oil (TTO) was discussed.
