Novel Quantitative and Qualitative Analytical Method for Furocoumarins using SFC-MS
Furocoumarins (FCs) are secondary metabolites found in various plant species. Due to their phototoxicity, there is a need for monitoring of these compounds in natural essential oils or extracts which are added to fragrance products. A Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) technique based on properties intermediate between LC and GC shows good chromatographic resolution for aromatic compounds and provides suitable performance with hyphenation to API-MS. However, no reports measuring FCs concentration using SFC-MS has been seen so far. Hence, we applied SFC-MS to FCs analyses, and compared them with LC-MS results. Moreover, we will discuss two interesting mass spectrometric phenomena found in this study, which could be related to the termed CO2-assisted ESI and accessibility of a terpenyloxy side chain to positive charge site.
