Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is widely accepted as a sensitive and rapid analytical method for elemental and isotopic analysis of various solid materials. Despite numerous advantages, including minimal sample preparation and the ability for in situ analyses with spatial characterisation, quantitative analysis using laser ablation sampling is often hindered by the fractionation of elements due to their different evaporation-condensation properties. The main source of elemental fractionation is the incomplete ionisation of elements in large-sized particles within the ICP. Although there have been reports on the size distribution of particles, the structure and state of the aerosols, and compositional changes depending on particle sizes, the study on the effect of particle size and their multielement composition at a nano-scale are not thoroughly investigated. Hence, this study aims to investigate the relationship of laser pulse duration on particle size and the compositions of the nano-sized aerosols. The nanoparticles were generated by laser ablation using two different types of lasers, a nanosecond laser and a femtosecond laser. Elemental composition of the aerosols was determined with an ICP equipped with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) to monitor the changes of light ions and heavy ions of the same particle.
