Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are oxidized by ozone (O3), hydroxyl radical and NO3 radical in the atmosphere. It is known that VOCs induce the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). α-Pinene, classified with monoterpenes, is one of the VOCs dominantly emitted from forests. In order to understand the oxidation reactions involving α-pinene. We investigated it by using an atmospheric pressure corona discharge ionization mass spectrometry (APCDI-MS). Measurements were carried out under two conditions including NO3 radical or O3 as an oxidant and CID were performed on the ion peaks derived from oxidation products of α-pinene. When NO3 radical was used as an oxidant, the neutral loss of CO2 and H2O2 were mainly observed, but when O3 was used as an oxidant, the neutral loss of H2O2 was hardly observed. It suggests therefore that NO3 radical results in forming oxidation products with carboxyl group and hydroperoxide, while oxidation products having carboxyl group are produced under O3.
