Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, which exists in the normal flora of the skin. P. acnes was classified into 3 types which are distinguished by phenotypes such serological agglutination tests, cell-wall, and morphology. The members of P. acnes were classified into the 3 types by using characteristic unknown peaks observed by MALDI-MS and SELDI-MS. In this study, we characterized ribosomal proteins in genome sequenced P. acnes observed by MALDI-MS. About 20 strains of P. acnes were classified by hierarchical cluster analysis using corresponding to ribosomal proteins as biomarkers. Sample strains were successfully classified into 3 types. MALDI-MS proteotyping is a promising method for typing of P. acnes as practical and reliable technique.
