Recent advances in science and technology made it possible to comprehensively extract and analyze molecular information such as a genome sequence responsible for genetic functions, the epigenome controlling it, the transcriptome which is an intermediate product, the proteome responsible for actual life activities, and the metabolome as their end products. Furthermore, because of the integrated analysis of these multi-layer 'omics data (trans-omics), there are increasing expectations that investigators can understand complicated biological phenomena that cannot be clarified by single-layer 'omics. Nonetheless, attempts to organize and integrate these multi-layered molecular datasets have just begun, and various efforts are being made such as expansion of measurement targets and acquisition of quantitative data via the development of analytical, processing, integration, and analytical technologies for large amounts of data.
In this session, we would like to elucidate the present status of trans-omics research and to discuss the technologies and problems of proteomics and metabolomics that should be addressed in the future trans-omics research.

Our dietary habit has greatly altered by social environment change. Food associated fields such as food processing and distribution become sophisticated and diversified. Health foods also become prominent from growing consumer awareness of health. However, we can hardly access enough food safety information. Mass spectrometry has used in food analyses to obtain evidence of food safety and functionality. Mass spectrometry will increase its future role. In this session, current issues in food analyses will be made clear and future mass spectrometry will be discussed.

Fundamental and practical aspects of LC/MS; Practice of ion transfer systems for atmospheric pressure ion sources

MSSJ Corporate Program Working Group (MSSJ CPWG) is organizing a consortium of instrument manufacturers. One of the objectives of this effort is to bridge the society and a wide range of MS users and encourage people to attend the annual conferences and join the society. To pursue this end, CPWG plans to hold serial workshops that would be attended by many ordinary MS users to share common problems and exchange information. In the past two workshops, we focused on matrix effect and mass separation mechanism and MS/MS analysis. In this year's workshop, we focus on ion transfer systems from an atmospheric pressure ion source to mass analyzer. The function of the ion transfer system is to improve desolvation efficiency, ion focusing and back ground noise reduction. Each manufacturer will explain about the design and features of the ion transfer system adopted. In addition, we will compare the design of each manufacturer as a summary in an easy-to-understand manner.

In this session, we would like to discuss the issue “What is mass? - Its essence and techniques used for its observation. By observing mass, it is possible to examine the nature of the target. Professor Hashimoto, a faculty member in the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University will provide us with some hints as to the nature of mass, a fundamental unit of measure, from the view of the quantum world. The session will also involve a discussion of the various phenomena that can be seen or discovered by using some of the new mass spectrometric techniques. This session will stimulate you understand the essence of mass that can be ordinarily be detected by MS and the world it creates.

Food security has become one of major concerns in connection with the rapid growth of population and world economy. To supply more foods at affordable prices, an integrated approach should be required to increase agricultural production and cope with environmental changes. Omics approach including proteomics can play a role in addressing this issue. Proteomics enables researchers to identify a broad spectrum of proteins in living cells, therefore it is useful for agricultural research for nutritional values or yield production etc. To promote activities of agricultural proteomics in the world, various techniques and experimental systems have been established. This session covers a broad range of agricultural proteome research areas, as well as some other omics approaches, using crops, foods, insects, microorganisms and animals. Furthermore, we will discuss how to contribute these techniques to system biology in agricultural science.

Natural products often have unique structure and biological activity, which have been useful as a lead compound for development of drugs and agrochemicals. Structural analysis and quantitation of natural compounds is critical for evaluation of its functionality. Mass spectrometry has been played a pivotal role in both qualitative and quantitative analysis of natural products, although other methods such as NMR are establishing a prominent position especially in structural analysis. However, mass spectrometric analysis is still essential for certain research areas of natural products. In this session, we will focus on the mass spectrometric analysis of natural products, and discuss novel techniques and technologies to contribute to the advancement of this research field.

The focus of this symposium is the application of mass spectrometry (MS) for industrial materials such as (co)polymer, surfactant, and organic/inorganic nanomaterials. Mass spectrometry is developing into one of the most significant and versatile analytical techniques for characterizing these industrial materials. The present meeting will provide an opportunity on the mass spectrometry of industrial materials to share their data and methods, and learn those from their colleagues and discuss the future direction. Some of the key issues on MS for functional materials that have been addressed are listed as the follows: i) ESI, MALDI, and new ionization methods including DESI, DART, and SALDI, ii) Detailed structural analysis by high-Resolution MS and MS/MS, iii) pyrolysis and chromatography such as GC, LC, and SEC, vi) imaging mass spectrometry, and v) data analysis.

In a research field of environmental analysis or environmental protection technology development, trace pollutant analysis or simultaneous determination of environmental pollutants in complex matrix are needed. In another field of exploratory research into emerging contaminant discovery or non-targeted analysis, determination of molecular formulae, elucidation of 2D-structures of targeted molecules or database-matching are needed. Mass spectrometry in a daily analysis has been widely utilized, while much effort should be spent towards popularization of it in a research use.

Medical care is progressing rapidly. In Japan, which is a very aging society, expectations are gathering for preventive medicine and preemptive medical care, and early detection and early diagnosis play a major role in realizing these. In addition, due to the accumulation of big data and improvement of analytical techniques, there is a high possibility that the ultimate personalized medicine by Precision Medicine based on genomic information of each patient is applied for insurance in the oncology field. Mass spectrometry has been widely used in biotechnology related fields as the performance of the apparatus is improved, but in recent years high performance mass spectrometry has been active not only in drug development and biochemical research but also in various clinical situations. Especially in combination with the development of omics technology, it contributes greatly in the field of chemical diagnosis and pathological diagnosis and also plays a big role in terms of individualized medical support by precise analysis of drugs and endogenous physiologically active molecules. In this session, I would like to discuss current status and future prospects of clinically active mass spectrometry.

Environmental dynamics of femto-level isotopes with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

The term “Femto-level isotopes” means extremely rare isotopes of which the isotopic ratio to the stable isotope will reach 1E-15 order. They typically are produced by the interaction of the cosmic-rays and serve as excellent records of past environmental condition. On the other hand, they also produced much after 1950’s due to human nuclear activities including nuclear weapons testing, nuclear power electricity, nuclear power plant accident. The session scope includes firstly the future perspective of the technical side of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry which is strongest analytical tool for the femto-level isotopes. The session also consider the actual human influence to the environment through the precise analysis of femto-level isotopes from the past to present in the several archives.

In recent years, the proteomic methods have diversified, various methods on sample preparation, measurement, data search, and informatics analysis have been developed. Even large-scale post-translational modification (PTM) analysis is becoming more popular. Recently various kinds of PTMs have been identified and it is possible to quantitate such PTMs in a large-scale. However, the function of most modification sites remains unknown, thus it is not easy to understand the regulatory cellular networks from large scale proteomic quantitative data at present.
In this session, we will focus on the approach to understand the regulatory cellular networks using PTM proteomics, functional proteomics related to protein activity, protein localization as well as drug targets etc. We will call for papers in a wide range of subjects related to PTM proteomics and functional proteomics in order to share the latest knowledge and discuss future prospects.

This session is organized to allow the audience understand the recent progress and perspectives of disease proteomics. Patient-benefiting outcome is one of the most expected goals of science. Development of biomarkers and identification of therapeutic targets are the popular subjects in disease proteomics, and significant outcomes have been appeared from the proteomic studies on diseases. In addition to the urgent applications of present proteomics modalities to clinical subjects, we also need to continuously promote fundamental proteomics technologies. Proteome is a complex entity with a wide variety aspect such as expression, modifications, activity, interaction, and localization. Thus, any single modalities cannot capture the whole proteome, and in this sense, multidisciplinary approach is indispensable in disease proteomics. Researchers with different backgrounds need to communicate with each other, sharing a common goal, and exchanging their ideas and experiences. In this session, the researchers who conduct proteomic studies with different view-points will present their resent progress. The subjects of their research will range from the development of promising technology to the applications of existing methods to clinical questions. The audience will understand the progress and prospects of disease proteomics after attending this session.

The growth of the proteome field has been remarkable in recent years. The analysis of large-scale proteome such as “Human Proteome Map” and “Clinical proteome tumor Analysis Consortium” is in progress. It is expected that the application of proteomic analysis will be expanded more and more with the expansion of these big data. The emergence and success of young researchers is essential for further development of this field.
On the one hand, through specialization in each field, opportunities for researchers with various backgrounds to conduct creative discussions each other are decreasing. Therefore, this session provides opportunities for young researchers to make a presentation and discussion under creative atmosphere. If there is anything related to proteome research, there is no restriction on the contents of your presentation. Including undergraduate students and graduate students, please join us! Recent development of mass spectrometry techniques has allowed us to measure more larger scale of biological samples and made the outputs more accurate. Mass spectrometer have been widely used in various omics areas such as metabolome, glycome and also proteome, and now it is almost no longer possible to study omics without mass spectrometer. While omics research originally needs both wet-experiments and data processing by informatics, in addition, it is necessary to make full use of computer power to analyze a large amount of information finally obtained. Informatics approach is thus indispensable in these fields for that purpose. We organize this session as a forum for multifaceted discussion on informatics analyses of mass spectrometry data, such as proteome and metabolome data. In this session, we will discuss on new approaches by computational science, as the foundation of the informatics; not confining the discussion to the existing data analysis methodologies.
