Ultra-High Sensitive Mass Spectrometric Detection of Trace Component in Liquid Samples using Aeromicelle Direct Liquid Introduction Technique

(Osaka Univ.)

In conventional mass spectrometry of liquid sample, there is a limit of sensitivity inherent to their technical principles. In this study, we developed a novel technique to make liquid samples introduce directly into mass spectrometer with a form of “aeromicelle”. Aeromicelles are particles made of liquid and surface-covering surfactants, which structure was found to suppress volatilization of liquid even in vacuum. We generated aeromicelles by spraying water/surfactant mixture containing trace amount of CsCl, and analyzed the aeromicelles with an aerosol time-of-fright mass spectrometer (ATOFMS). We detected both surfactant and Cs ions in the same particles even under the condition that Cs was only a few amol (10-18mol) or less in each aeromicelles.
