Sophistication of Water Quality Management Utilizing Non-target Screening Analysis

Environmental water dissolves natural organic matters and anthropogenic compounds, some of which are harmful or problematic in water treatment processes. However, conventional target analysis can only monitor the compounds of interest while there are much more unknown compounds. Recent development of high resolution mass spectrometry such as Orbitrap MS largely facilitated the detection and identification of unknown molecules in the environmental samples. The method can be further applied to analyze samples without deciding compounds to be detected prior to the analysis, which is called non-target screening analysis. We have been using Orbitrap MS 1) to characterize dissolved organic matters in the environmental water, 2) to deepen our understanding of the transformation in water treatment processes, and 3) to retrieve the biodegradable organic matters. The current research project entitled “Development of Simultaneous Analysis Methods for ‘Investigated Items’ and Selection Procedures for Their Candidates for Water Environment Conservation”, supported by The Ministry of the Environment, Japan, will also be introduced. The project aims to establish the screening analysis method for the ‘Investigated Items’ with supplementing the missing toxicity data, and to develop the scheme for nontarget analysis to cover unknown but potentially important compounds.
