Retrospective analysis of multimedia environmental monitoring data acquired by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
(Univ. Tokyo)
oAkitoshi Goto, Takaaki Itai
The present study performed a retrospective analysis using an in-house database of environmental and biological samples measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to screen for prospective biomarkers applicable to paleoenvironmental studies. Several halogenated natural products (HNPs), which can be biosynthesized by marine algal and/or bacterial species, were widely detected in marine sediments and organisms. Notably, specific brominated dioxin congeners were also present in the marine sediment layers corresponding to the early twentieth century, suggesting their potential utility as paleoenvironmental biomarkers.
