Numerous studies have suggested that the use of pesticides may be one of the most significant factors threatening honey bee health. Coumaphos, a synthetic organophosphate insecticide, is currently widely used to protect honey bee colonies from Varroa mites because it is considered weakly toxic to bees. However, previous studies have reported that exposure to coumaphos negatively affects honey bee health, including increased cell death within bee tissues, disrupted olfactory learning, and reduced foraging activity.
To further elucidate the mechanisms underlying the complex interactions between coumaphos and honey bees, we conducted comparative metabolic profiling of coumaphos-exposed and control bees using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS. The results indicated that coumaphos exposure affected various metabolites involved in purine metabolism, lysine degradation, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, and other pathways, with differences observed depending on the exposure time.
Taken together, our study revealed changes in metabolic profiles and related metabolic pathways in coumaphos-exposed honey bees, expanding our understanding of the potential mechanisms behind the negative effects of coumaphos on honey bees.
