According to the KOrean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS), the number of registered vehicles in South Korea has been increasing annually, reaching approximately 26 million. This trend corresponds to a rise in both tire usage and disposal. As tires wear down during use, particulate matter containing tire-derived compounds is released into the atmosphere, contributing to road and urban dust pollution.
Among tire additives, the toxicity of 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ) to commercially significant fish species, such as coho salmon1), has been extensively studied. More recently, benzothiazole derivatives have been associated with potential health effects, including DNA damage and cell apoptosis2). Road and urban dust serve as potential sources of such hazardous tire-derived compounds.
In this study, we selected liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to effectively separate and identify tire additives in dust samples. Five compounds were selected for quantification, providing insights into their environmental presence and potential risks. Our findings enhance the understanding of tire-related pollution and its implications for both human and ecological health.
