Plastic waste has led to the widespread presence of microplastics (MPs), posing significant environmental and health risks, whereas existing analytical methods for MPs often face limitations due to complexity of pretreatments or data processing. Herein, a new system combining microwave plasma torch (MPT) ion source with LTQ Orbitrap MS was developed for rapid MPs analysis. This method, taking only 30 seconds per test, is versatile, accommodating various MP sizes. The MPT ion source effectively desorbs and ionizes MPs without excessive fragmentation, ensuring clear and identifiable mass spectra. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of a range of MPs was achieved, with LODs at the nanogram level. Additionally, the method showed resilience against matrix interferences and compatibility with environmental sample analysis, and SEM could be involved to enhance size and morphology analysis. This approach provides a rapid, efficient, and comprehensive solution for MPs detection, advancing environmental monitoring and characterization of MPs.
