Imaging Analysis of Steroids in Adrenal Glands Using SALDI/MS with Metal Films

Analyzing steroids in biological tissues is important for revealing their physiological roles. This study compared matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI/MS), surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI/MS) with metal films, and matrix-enhanced SALDI/MS for the detection of steroids in adrenal glands. MALDI/MS detected ions of derivatized steroids, while SALDI/MS achieved strong signals without derivatization. It was shown that the steroids that could be detected with high sensitivity vary depending on the ionization method.
