Simulation and Experimental Study of a Photoionization Linear Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer
(NSRL,USTC)
oGuangqi Wang
This study designed a compact UV-photoionization linear ion trap mass spectrometer with a hyperbolic ion trap. Innovations include: 1) deriving ion motion dynamics and excitation frequencies using a perturbation method to solve the Mathieu equation; 2) optimizing ion transmission efficiency is 0.4% experimentally validated through SIMION and COMSOL simulations ; 3) determining the optimal placement of the electron multiplier positioned 10 mm from the ion trap ; 4) identifying suitable AC excitation parameters: the peak-to-peak voltage is 2 Vpp, and the frequency range is from 1/4 to 1/3 of the RF frequency through full-process simulations of ionization, transport, detection, and mass spectrum generation ; 5) confirming optimal AC excitation voltage is 2Vpp and frequency is 270KHz for maximum signal intensity is 400mV. The work advances ion trap mechanisms to enhance resolution and sensitivity for small mass-to-charge ions and explores engineering solutions for portable on-site mass spectrometers.
