Here we demonstrate two advanced LA-ICP-MS approaches for the determination of ultra-trace rare earth elements (REEs) U-Th isotopes in the carbonate stalagmites with their improved sensitivity. By adopting the
“jet" interface setup, limits of detection (LOD) reached as low as sub-ng/g range for REE standards and stalagmite samples. Application to a stalagmite collected from East Timor revealed at least two abrupt elevations in REEs, possibly contributed from the volcanic tephra. This jet interface setup for the U-Th dating approach enhanced the detection efficiency to 1-2%, which allows for the detection of sufficient amounts of the low abundant 230Th+(101-103 pg/g), in particular for Holocene stalagmites as young to 1000 years. We expect this highly-sensitive LA-ICP-MS setup could make substantial contributions to various fields in paleoclimatology, oceanography, environmental science, and archaeology.
