Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI/MS) is an alternative to MALDI for biomolecular ionization. In this study, we developed a mist chemical vapor deposition (mist CVD) system to form silver (Ag) films for SALDI/MS. The mist CVD enables atmospheric-pressure metal film deposition using ultrasonically generated droplets of metal salt solution. Silver trifluoroacetate was used as the metal salt, forming uniform Ag films. Compared to conventional methods, mist CVD provided a rapid, simple, and reproducible approach to metal film formation, and the films were useful for effectively ionizing lipids and polymers in SALDI/MS.
