Cosmetics are made from raw materials ranging from small molecules like fragrances to bigger molecules such as essential oils, surfactants, polysaccharides, and inorganic substances such as pigments, and dyes. The complexity of this material raises problems in proper handling and usage. Daily activities can require reapplication as cosmetics and personal products are not permanent, exposing this to different external factors (temperature, humidity, etc) that can alter the product's chemistry. This can result in the production of foul odors, allergens, and other substances. Gas Chromatography in tandem with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is widely used for cosmetic analysis. However, the complexity of the sample and limitations of the instrument. This study uses comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography in tandem with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS) to study the effect of temperature where cosmetics are exposed in our daily lives. Results are then statistically analyzed to determine the handling effects of cosmetics.
