Phytoalexins are secondary antimicrobial compounds that are rapidly accumulated de novo upon pathogen attacks. However, compared to their well-known functions against fungi and oomycetes, their roles in plant-bacterial interactions remained obscure as exemplified by camalexin, the major phytoalexin in Arabidopsis. Our previous study revealed that the promoter activity of PHYTOALEXIN DEFICIENT 3 (PAD3), a gene required for the camalexin synthesis, is specifically suppressed in the leaf area infiltrated with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst) in a Type III Secretion System-dependent manner. We will present our further dissection of this bacterial suppression of camalexin (CA), including mass spectrometry imaging techniques using the iMScopeTM QT (Shimadzu Co.) and the LA -ICPMS-2030 (Shimadzu Co.).
