The oxygen isotopic ratios of sulfate in gypsum formed in limestone caves can be used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Although the oxygen isotopic ratios of sulfate ions are analyzed using BaSO4 produced from dissolved gypsum, no standard method for conversion from gypsum to BaSO4 has been established to date. In this study, we discuss the reliability of available pretreatment methods for obtaining accurate oxygen isotopic ratios in gypsum.
