The oxygen isotopic ratios of sulfate in gypsum formed in limestone caves can be used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Although the oxygen isotopic ratios of sulfate ions are analyzed using BaSO₄ produced from dissolved gypsum, no standard method for conversion from gypsum to BaSO₄ has been established to date. In this study, we discuss the reliability of available pretreatment methods for obtaining accurate oxygen isotopic ratios in gypsum.
