ICP質量分析法による揮発性有機化合物の分析

Mass spectrometry utilizing an ICP as an ion source (ICP-MS) now becomes one of the most principal choice for sensitive elemental analysis. Because of both the high excitation and kinetic temperatures (i.e., hard ionization), ICP-MS is less susceptible to the matrix effect, and thus, the technique is widely used for the quantitative analysis of trace elements. However, with the conventional ICP-MS, molecules would be completely decomposed in the ICP, and therefore, detection of molecules (organic compounds) in their original form cannot be achieved. To overcome this, ionization through an ion reaction with the ICP-induced primary ions was adopted in this study. Magnitude of softness of the ionization can be adjusted by selecting the primary ions produced by the ICP. With the technique developed here, analytical capability of the ICP-MS can be further expanded to the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
