Charge inversion mass spectrometry has been performed by sector mass spectrometers to investigate the ETD mechanism of peptides and amino acids. However when fragment ions are analyzed by the electric sector, observed peaks broaden according to their kinetic energy release (KER). To solve this problem, we performed charge inversion mass spectrometry using an ESI-TOF/TOF instrument developed at Osaka University. A quadratic-field ion mirror was used as MS2 of the instrument, because time-of-flight of fragments does not depend on the kinetic energies of the fragments, but only on their masses. In this way, high mass resolving power can be used to elucidate further information about the ETD mechanism.
