Although there are some mass spectrometric imaging (MSI) software packages available for public, strong demands for easy and intuitive MSI data manipulation tools still remain to be satisfied. Therefore, we developed an MSI software package equipped with two advanced features.
We developed a new MSI data format to enable rapid MSI data. In the software, all the spectra in MS measurement raw data are read and reformatted into the newly developed format. No m/z binning is performed so that high resolving power MSI data can be handled, yet allowing reasonably efficient data processing and visualization.
We also considered methods for MSI data manipulation. Relative similarity in spatial distributions of different biomolecules is an important viewpoint for MSI data manipulation. However, the images of interests are still manually collected and compared to discover similar spatial distributions of compounds. We thus utilized clustering analysis of a position-m/z matrix data to evaluate the spatial correlation among the ion intensities within specific regions. Using the calculated cluster information, images with higher spatial similarity to target images are easily retrieved, while user still can reconstruct images with arbitrary m/z values.
