Periodontal disease is one of the most concerned threats to oral health. In addition, correlation with systemic diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease have also been reported recently. Therefore, it is important to establish a new method for diagnosing periodontal disease in an early stage. Additionally, it was suggested that periodontitis progression could be observed with a changing metabolite profile. In this study, saliva samples of healthy volunteers and mild to moderate periodontitis patients were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). As a result, some metabolites in saliva were found to be significantly different between healthy volunteers and patients.
