Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) is increasingly used for a variety of applications. One drawback to MALDI-IMS is its spatial resolution, which is restricted by laser scanning and matrix crystalline sizes. Alternatively, stigmatic-type mass microscope detects ion distributions of analytes within a laser spot and can provide a high spatial resolution irrespective of the focused laser beam diameter. Recently, desorption ionization using through hole alumina membrane (DIUTHAME) as a matrix-free laser desorption/ionization method has been developed by the authors’ group. The proposed combination was examined along with a newly-invented detector for stigmatic-type mass microscope.
