In this study, we developed a practical online supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography/mass spectrometry (SFE-SFC/MS) system with a novel split-flow method, which enabled the continuous extraction and separation of a wide range of compounds including hydrophilic ones. In this system, a part of the extract was introduced into the separation section due to the differential pressure of two BPRs and make-up pump flow rate to reduce the peak distortion of target analyte caused by an excess of extract-containing extractant. Moreover, the separation was improved by the use of an additional pre-column capable of interacting with compounds weakly retained on the analytical column.
