Py-GC/MS has been applied to structural analysis of commodity, engineering, and high-performance plastics. On the other hand, the application of Py-GC/MS to structural analysis of polymer semiconductors having rigid π-conjugated structures in their main chain has not been well examined. In this study, we performed structural analysis of poly(3-hexylthiophene) by Py-GC/MS technique. Here we used a GC/MS instrument with a high-resolution time-of-flight-mass spectrometer equipped with a photo-ionization (PI) source. Since PI is a soft ionization method, we could find the pyrolyzed compounds derived from π-conjugated main chain. In addition, we found that the pyrolyzed compounds can be categorized in several groups by Kendrick Mass Defect (KMD) analysis.
