In MALDI-MS, phenolic hydroxyl groups are known to be important as proton sources for the ionization of sample molecules. However, differences in ionization efficiency are observed even among matrices containing phenolic hydroxyl groups. In this study, we will discuss the nature of the hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups in the matrix and the relationship between the strength of the hydrogen bonds in the matrix and the ionization threshold.
