Mass spectrometry imaging of a polyethylene film containing Chimassorb® 944 as the HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer) with photodegraded areas was performed using t-SPESI (tapping-mode scanning probe electrospray ionization) after optimizing the extraction solvent with LESA (liquid extraction surface analysis). We found that the optimal extraction solvents differ between LESA and t-SPESI. We discovered that Chimassorb® 944 was localized in the non-irradiated area compared to the light-irradiated area, and its oxidative decomposition product and the low molecular weight component were localized in the light-irradiated area and intermediate area.
