Microplastics are small plastic particles that result from both commercial product development and the breakdown of larger plastics. Microplastics are not a single type of contaminant but a wide variety. The presented methodology combines direct analysis in real time (DART) ionization with an ionRocket thermal desorption and pyrolysis device for microplastic analysis. This allows compounds in the sample to be sublimated, vaporized, or pyrolyzed according to their volatility. After measurement, unknowns were differentiated through thermal profiling, as well as distinguished different additives by using analysis software.
