In the experimental study of ion-molecule reactions using a drift tube and a mass spectrometer, we can obtain information on geometrical structures of both reactant and product ions and on the rate constants of the relevant reactions. In this study, we have examined ion-molecule reactions between an yttrium oxide cluster ion and a nitric oxide molecule by using home-made experimental apparatus for ion mobility-mass spectrometry. For the Y4O7+ ion, NO oxidation reaction Y4O7+ + NO → Y4O6+ + NO2 was found to proceed along with the addition reaction Y4O7+ + NO → Y4O7(NO)+. Kinetics, energetics, and mechanisms of the above two reactions were discussed from the structure analysis of the reactant and product cluster ions with ion mobility spectrometry, NO-concentration dependence of ion intensities, and the reaction route calculations.
