Comparative study on the ambient air dc and ac corona discharge ionization was made. Tunneling electron emission from the tip of the needle electrode was observed when 15 kHz ac highvoltage was applied to the needle. In contrast, corona discharge was directly generated for dc-mode operation. Primary reaction product ions formed from dc/ac corona discharge were O2-•, NO2-, O3-•, CO3-•, HCO3-, NO3-, etc.. CO3-• shows dual reactivity: O-• transfer reaction (e.g., formation of [TNT+O]-• for trinitrotoluene (TNT)) and H atom abstraction reaction to form HCO3- : both are oxidation reactions. In our study, H abstraction was observed for HNO3, H2O2, toluene, and isopropanol. Air corona discharge plasma is used for sterilization of corona virus (COVID-19) in personal and public spaces. Because CO3-• is the major ion generated from the air corona discharge, its reactivity toward various compounds should be scrutinized.
