High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry of Extraterrestrial Organic Compounds

High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) is a powerful tool to reveal chemical evolution of extraterrestrial organic matter in meteorites and asteroidal materials obtained by sample-return missions. In this study, soluble organic compounds were extracted from carbonaceous meteorites to apply the HRMS analyses coupled with liquid chromatography as well as with direct molecular imaging using desorption
electrospray ionization (DESI). A series of homologous organic compounds including CHN and CHN2 has been identified as cyclic structures. The complex mixtures of meteoritic compounds could be synthesized from simple aldehydes and ammonia through the carbon elongation by the formose-type reactions.
