Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Recombinant Erythropoietin for Doping Control Purposes

(LSI Medience)

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a haematopoietic hormone; however, the use of recombinant EPO (rEPO) enables transporting more oxygen to muscles and rEPOs are still being misused by athletes. Therefore, EPO related products are listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. For sports drug testing, the errorless discrimination of exogenously administered EPO from endogenous human EPO is required. A gel electrophoretic methods for detecting rEPOs in sports drug testing have been approved by the WADA. This presentation comprises three topics, i.e., Mass spectrometric characterization of rEPOs and their biosimilars, LC−MS/MS method for detecting darbepoetin alfa in human urine, and mass spectrometric differentiation between PEGylated rEPO and human EPO.
