MetaboBank: A brand new- public repository of metabolomic data

MetaboBank1) is a public repository for metabolome data obtained by researchers. A deposition and publication of metabolome data are becoming essential when the analyzed results are submitted to journals and so on. Two principal websites, namely, MetaboLights2) in the European Bioinformatics Institutes (EBI, EU) and Metabolomics Workbench3) in the National Institutes of Health (NIH, US), have been servicing since around 2012. MetaboBank has been launched in October 2020 in Bioinformation and DDBJ Center of National Institute of Genetics, as the third public repository. One of the issues of public repositories of metabolome data is the difficulty of reuse of the deposited data for further comprehensive analysis. This is caused by a difficulty to compare the data and/or to judge the appropriateness of the data for use in comparative analysis because most of the data are obtained by customized procedures and instrumental settings according to the purpose (major target of metabolites) of the researchers. MetaboBank aims at overcoming this and enabling new knowledge discoveries by the reuse of the deposited data. A registration of the details of the experimental procedures (metadata) in a manner that the researchers can easily analyze with bioinformatics is a key to the solution. MetaboBank provides a specific metadata editor named “MetaboBank Editor” which is a Microsoft Excel-based macro program for this purpose.
