A novel matrix-free laser desorption/ionization method is invented by using a device based on through hole alumina membrane, which is potentially applicable to imaging mass spectrometry. The fabricated membrane has a 2D ordered structure consisting of closely aligned straight through holes of sub-micron in diameter. The capillary action of the through holes allows materials behind the membrane to come up the exposed side. Reproducible mass spectra were obtained from a wide surface area of the membrane.
