The energy density and research octane number of furans are close to those of commercial gasolines and furans are being expected as new bio-fuels. Several experimental studies for thermal decomposition of furans have been performed by mass psctrometry. Theoretical studies with detailed chemical reaction mechanism have also been conducted. To understand the thermal decomposition of furans in more details, photoionization mass spectrometry was applied to analysis of the thermal decomposition of furans.
