We screened persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and their related compounds in blue mussels (<I>Mytilus edulis<I>) from the Seto Inland Sea using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToFMS). Various POPs such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-<I>p<I>-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were detected in mussel tissues. Furthermore, POP-like natural compounds (e.g. PBDDs, OH-/MeO-PBDEs), which may be synthesized by marine algal species, were also found at relatively high concentrations. These results suggest that mussels from the Seto Inland Sea are highly exposed to not only hazardous anthropogenic contaminants but also marine natural compounds.
