At low electric fields, ion mobility is independent of electric field strength; however, at high electric fields, ion mobility shows a nonlinear dependence on field strength. High field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) utilizes the characteristics of nonlinear ion mobility at high and low electric fields to separate ions. We developed a FAIMS/MS system in which a FAIMS microchip was coupled with an atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometer. In this study, FAIMS/MS was used for the separation of the cluster ions generated by a corona ionizer in air.
