Application and Issue of Metabolomics for Drug Discovery

(ONO Pharma.)
oSetsuko Fujita

Metabolomics is increasingly being applied to the identification of biomarkers for disease diagnosis, clinical development, and drug discovery. Mass spectrometry techniques have become an effective method for metabolomics because of their sensitivity and selectivity. However, the progress of metabolomics is still hampered by many unsolved problems. It requires improvement in the mode of collection and preparation of biological samples, the coverage and quality of mass spectrometry analyses, the extraction and exploitation of the raw data, and the identification of the metabolites and the biological interpretation of the results. We would like to discuss how to cope with these issues for the further progress of metabolomics.
