The traditional ionization FAB and the new ionization ESI for LC/MS
Although electrospray is most popular ionization for wide variety of compounds in biological samples, electrospray ionization (ESI) has a big problem of the matrix effects. In metabolomics, especially, the matrix effect is extremely serious for the analysis of biological samples. On the other hand, fast atom bombardment (FAB) ionization, which is the traditional ionization for small molecules in biological samples, has less matrix effect than ESI. The difference ESI and FAB for matrix effect will be discussed.
