Tracing Volatile Cycling in the Earth's Interior by Highly Sensitive Noble Gas Mass Spectrometry

(Univ. Tokyo)
oHirochika Sumino

Noble gases are powerful tracers of volatile cycling in the Earth’s interior. Highly sensitive noble gas mass spectrometry techniques have made it possible to analyze not only ultratrace amount of noble gas isotopes, but also trace halogens through their conversion to noble gas isotopes by neutron irradiation. Here I will introduce recent findings in Earth and planetary science, which were not possible without improvement of sensitivity of noble gas mass spectrometer and ingenuity with extracting noble gases from targeted sites.
