The performance of zero voltage paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (zvPSI-MS)1,2), a new variant in ambient mass spectrometry, was evaluated through its applications to the direct and fast analysis of liquid and solid samples. The zvPSI-MS was designed to combine the advantages of paper spray ionization (PSI) and solvent assisted inlet ionization (SAII) techniques. In zvPSI-MS, a liquid or solid sample is loaded onto a piece of filter paper, and then extracted by a few microliters of solvent deposited at once as a droplet. The solvent that dissolves analyte(s) of interest is instantaneously introduced to a mass spectrometer as micro droplets, which are ejected from the far end of the filter by aspiration towards the orifice of inlet capillary. The zvPSI-MS inherits favorable features of PSI and SAII such as fast analysis, easy sample handlings, and extraction/separation capabilities (PSI) with no need for (high-)voltage, laser, heat or gas to ionize analytes (SAII). Proof-of-concept studies have revealed that zvPSI-MS has capabilities of very fast (<1s) qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis for a variety of analytes such as small organic compounds, peptides, lipids and polymers with no sample pretreatments. The potentials and limitations of zvPSI-MS are discussed through method validation and applications to real world samples such as an analysis of skin surface imprint.
